What is Instagram engagement rate?
Instagram engagement rate is the share of an audience that interacts with a post, shown as a percentage. It is calculated by dividing interactions (such as likes and comments) by an audience number: followers, accounts reached or views.
Because there are three common denominators, the same post can have three different engagement rates. A number is only meaningful when you know which formula produced it, so this calculator always labels the formula next to the result.
- By followersUses public numbers. Anyone, including brands, can check it.
- By reachUses private Insights data. Best for creators judging their own content.
- Reel by viewsUses plays. Best for comparing Reels, which travel beyond followers.
The three formulas
How to calculate Instagram engagement rate
Engagement rate by followers
(average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100
The standard public formula, and the one most benchmarks use. If you add saves and shares, the calculator shows that as a separate extended interaction rate, so the standard figure stays comparable.
Engagement rate by reach
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ accounts reached × 100
Measures how many of the people who actually saw a post interacted with it. Reach, saves and shares come from the creator's Instagram Insights; they cannot be seen on a public profile.
Reel engagement rate by views
selected interactions ÷ views × 100
Reels are shown to many non-followers, so views are a fairer base than followers. Choose which interactions to include; public comparisons use likes + comments only.
Worked examples
Engagement rate calculation examples
A creator with 25,000 followers looks at the last 12 posts and one recent Reel.
| Formula | Numbers | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| By followers (12-post average) | 410 likes, 22 comments, 25,000 followers | (410 + 22) ÷ 25,000 × 100 | 1.73% |
| By reach (one Reel) | 980 likes, 41 comments, 160 saves, 95 shares; 18,400 reached | 1,276 ÷ 18,400 × 100 | 6.93% |
| By views, likes + comments | Same Reel, 52,000 views | 1,021 ÷ 52,000 × 100 | 1.96% |
| By views, all interactions | Same Reel, 52,000 views | 1,276 ÷ 52,000 × 100 | 2.45% |
One Reel, four honest numbers. Quote the formula with the rate, and compare like with like. 1.73% equals about 17 interactions per 1,000 followers.
Inputs
What counts as an engagement on Instagram?
Likes and comments are public on most posts. Saves, shares (sends), reach and profile visits are visible only to the account owner through Instagram Insights. Story replies and link taps are tracked separately and are not part of a post's engagement rate.
Some accounts hide like counts. In that case, ask the creator for an Insights screenshot instead of guessing.
| Metric | Who can see it |
|---|---|
| Likes | Public (unless hidden) |
| Comments | Public |
| Reel views | Public |
| Saves | Account owner (Insights) |
| Shares | Account owner (Insights) |
| Accounts reached | Account owner (Insights) |
Many posts
How to analyse multiple posts
Pick 9–12 recent posts or Reels that are at least a few days old, so likes have settled. Leave out giveaways, paid ads and pinned posts. Switch to Post by post in the calculator and enter each post on its own row.
The calculator works out every post's rate first, then reports the mean, the median, the highest and lowest post and how much results vary. The median is taken from the individual post rates, never from combined totals.
- Median close to meanResults are steady from post to post.
- Mean far above medianOne or two posts went viral; the median shows the typical post.
- Latest vs historyWith 3+ posts, the newest post is compared with the median of the earlier ones.
Benchmarks
Instagram engagement rate benchmarks by follower tier
Engagement rate by followers usually falls as accounts grow, while engagement by views stays much flatter. The figures below come from one recent public dataset. They are UK and US creators, not Indian creators, so treat them as a reference point, not a target.
| Tier | By followers (likes + comments) | Reels by plays (likes + comments) | Middle half, by plays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano (1K–10K) | 1.9% | 2.8% | 1.3%–4.4% |
| Micro (10K–100K) | 0.89% | 3.1% | 1.8%–4.8% |
| Mid (100K–500K) | 0.33% | 3.2% | 1.8%–5.1% |
| Macro (500K–1M) | 0.38% | 3.5% | 2%–5.3% |
| Mega (1M+) | 0.36% | 3.4% | 2%–5.1% |

Vendor dataset skewed to mid-size and large accounts; excludes posts under 7 days old and #ad posts; follower count measured at collection, not posting. Not Indian data.
Brand accounts engage far less per follower than creators. Socialinsider, 2026 Social Media Benchmarks reports an average of 0.48% by followers (likes + comments) across 598,969 brand accounts; 75,589,902 posts in 2025 posts.
We do not show a benchmark for engagement by reach, because we have not found a recent public study with a clear method and sample. Compare reach-based rates with your own past posts instead.
Creator vs brand engagement
Creators build audiences around a person, so followers tend to interact more. Brand accounts post more promotional content to larger, looser audiences, and their typical rate by followers is a fraction of a creator's. Pick the right account type in the calculator so the comparison uses the right dataset.
Public metrics vs Instagram Insights
A public profile shows followers, likes, comments and Reel views. Insights adds reach, saves, shares, audience location and age. Brands vetting a creator should calculate the public rate themselves and then ask for Insights screenshots for reach and audience data.
Avoid these
Common engagement rate mistakes
Mixing formulas
Comparing your reach-based rate with a follower-based benchmark makes you look better than you are, or worse.
Using one post
A single viral or weak post says little. Use 9–12 posts and look at the median.
Counting fresh posts
Posts from the last day or two are still collecting likes. Wait a few days.
Including giveaways
"Comment to win" posts inflate comments. Leave them out.
Adding saves to public rates
Saves and shares are private, so public benchmarks exclude them. Keep them in a separate figure.
Judging on one number
A rate cannot prove an audience is real or right for a brand. Read the comments and audience data too.
For brands
How brands can evaluate influencer engagement
- Calculate the rate by followers from 9–12 recent organic posts, and compare the median with the creator's tier.
- For Reels-heavy creators, also check engagement by views.
- Read the comments: specific, on-topic replies matter more than emojis.
- Ask for Insights screenshots of reach, audience city and age.
- Review past branded posts against the creator's organic median.

For creators
How creators can improve content performance
- Track your own median every month; it matters more than any industry average.
- Compare formats: run the calculator separately for Reels and carousels.
- Open with a clear hook and ask a specific question in the caption.
- Reply to early comments; conversation keeps the post active.
- Make saveable content: checklists, tutorials, prices, locations.
- Share your reach-based rate with brands, clearly labelled, alongside the public rate.
FAQ
Instagram engagement rate questions
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
There is no official Instagram standard. Engagement rate by followers falls as accounts grow, so compare like with like: the same formula, a similar follower tier and the same account type. In Kyra's July–September 2026 data for UK and US creators, the median creator's rate by followers was 1.9% for 1K–10K accounts and 0.89% for 10K–100K accounts. Your own trend over recent posts is often the most useful comparison.
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
The most common public formula is (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. If you have Instagram Insights, you can also divide interactions by accounts reached, or, for Reels, divide interactions by views. Always say which formula you used.
Should I include saves and shares?
Saves and shares are only visible to the account owner in Insights, so public benchmarks leave them out. This calculator keeps the standard rate as likes + comments and shows saves and shares in a separate, clearly labelled extended rate.
What is the difference between engagement rate by followers and by reach?
By followers divides interactions by the follower count, which anyone can see. By reach divides by the number of accounts that actually saw the post, which only the creator can see in Insights. Reach-based rates are usually higher and are not comparable with follower-based benchmarks.
How many posts should I use?
Use 9–12 recent feed posts or Reels that are at least a few days old. Leave out giveaways, paid ads and pinned posts. With the multi-post option, the calculator works out each post's rate first, then shows the mean and the median.
Why use the median instead of the average?
One viral post can pull the average up a lot. The median is the middle post's rate, so it reflects a typical post better. Showing both tells you whether results are steady or driven by a few outliers.
Can a high engagement rate prove a creator's audience is real?
No. Engagement rate is one signal. It cannot confirm audience authenticity, location or buying intent. Brands should also review comments, audience demographics from Insights screenshots and past campaign results.
Does this tool connect to my Instagram account?
No. It does not log in to Instagram, look up profiles or scrape data. You enter numbers from your profile or Insights, and the calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you choose to save a report.

Methodology and sources
- Formulas follow the definitions above (formula version 1.0.0). Numbers are calculated exactly and rounded half-up to two decimals; very small positive rates show as "<0.01%".
- Optional saves and shares never change the standard rate by followers; they produce a separate extended rate.
- Multi-post statistics are calculated from each post's own rate. Standard deviation uses the sample formula.
- A benchmark is shown only when its formula and account type match your calculation and your follower tier is covered. No reach benchmark is shown.
- The calculator does not access Instagram. It cannot verify audience authenticity.
